Bamboo not a tree anymore as president clears ordinance amending forest law
By Champions'Square Institute |
- President ‘Ram Nath Kovind’ has cleared an ordinance amending the Indian Forest Act, 1927, omitting bamboo grown in non-forest areas from the definition of trees.
- Earlier, the union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the promulgation of the Ordinance on amendment of Section 2 (7) of the Indian Forest Act, 1927.
- This would help in exempting it trees that need permits for felling or transportation.
Note:
- Bamboo grown in forest areas shall continue to be governed by the Forest Conservation Act, 1980.
- The ordinance omits bamboo grown in non-forest areas from the definition of trees, thereby exempting it from requiring permits for felling or transportation.
